We are so excited that the Queensland Government is phasing out plastic bags by this year and that our environment will soon be cleaner and greener. This movement is in line with the sustainability and eco-friendliness that Sophia. supports and to celebrate this incredible change, we would like to announce that the newest products being introduced to the Sophia. range, are environmentally friendly tote bags!
These durable bags are a replacement for plastic and can be used over and over again for grocery shopping, as a beach bag as well as everyday use. Make sure you purchase your hand designed bag to have ready for when plastic bags are no longer an option. Do your bit to make Australia cleaner and our oceans free of plastic.
We are thrilled to announce that we have just launched our jellyfish tote bags in collaboration with Ocean Crusaders, a Brisbane based organisation who work tirelessly to clean our oceans and educate the public.
“The greatest issue our oceans face is that the world is unaware of the problem we are causing. The convenient plastic bag and plastic products are everywhere and no one thinks of where they are going. Humans slaughter thousands of dolphins, turtles and sharks and hundreds of whales every year with little knowledge of what damage we are causing. With representatives across the globe and growing constantly, our education program is a unique learning tool and available to everyone free of charge.”
Sophia Mulheran designs has created an intricate jellyfish design for the purpose of printing it onto reusable and eco-friendly cotton bags to use for shopping and every day use. The jellyfish symbolises the plastic bags that turtles mistake for food and looks to the future when our environment will hopefully be free from this toxic and harmful waste.
Across Queensland, plastic bags will no longer be available in retailers and so these bags are the perfect alternative. These carefully designed tote bags are great for everyday use as well as raising awareness for our precious sea life and reducing plastic waste.
50% percent of the profits are going straight to Ocean Crusaders to help them to continue the work they already do as well as supporting their many campaigns. If you’d love to do your part and stop using plastic bags while supporting wonderful initiatives, then purchase your very own tote bag under our “Limited Edition” section.
If you’ve got feedback, questions or queries about this campaign, make sure you let us know!
Happy Clean Up Australia Day! For the past few months, the Sophia. Team and a few dedicated ocean lovers have been cleaning up the beaches, mangroves and foreshores of the local Brisbane area to free our seas of rubbish that definitely doesn't belong.
In one afternoon alone, an entire trailer load of rubbish was removed which is both tragic (because there was that much rubbish in such a small area) but also a relief because that toxic and harmful waste is no longer clogging our waterways.
Surprisingly, the majority of rubbish removed was not plastic, but glass. A collection of strange objects were also dragged from the mud including half a bike, a pair of gumboots, a full bottle of perfume and the detached piece of elastic from a pair of undies.
According to the National Geographic, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibres per square kilometre litter the deep sea. We don’t know about you, but we’re disgusted at the fact we’ve let this problem become so overwhelmingly large and quite simply, detrimental to our environment.
We’re hoping to continue our ocean clean ups every week because we know that it is definitely having a positive impact on our marine life and we’d like to see the fauna and flora flourish for a long time to come.
To do your part in helping keep the rubbish from our waterways please:
If we all work together on this, we’ll be able to help unclog the oceans and free our sea life from disturbing and unfair deaths. Please help to make a difference soon as we don't want it to become too late to fix!
Let us know what you did for Clean Up Australia Day!
From stripping wire to untwisting each individual strand, did you know that each of our copper bowls and plates takes more than 9 hours to create? Endless hours have been spent in the workshop to craft the 100% recycled copper wire into beautiful creations.
We love the gorgeous copper colour and although its an extremely time consuming process, we’re in love with the finished product. Copper can bring any space to life and we think it goes exceptionally well with fresh fruit and a bunch of freshly picked flowers.
Because of our overwhelming obsession with copper, we’ve compiled this list of 101 uses for our copper plates and bowls:
Did you know that a third of the planet’s food goes to waste because of cosmetic reasons? It may be because of small blemishes, because they’re too large or too small or simply because the colour is slightly different. To help reduce this staggering statistic, you can do your part by shopping at places that provide otherwise rejected fruit and vegetables.
According to National Geographic, if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world after China and the U.S. And the food waste from our planet would be enough to feed 2 billion people! Wrap your head around that!
To add to the fact that most of our food isn't sustainable, are food miles. Calculating road transport alone, our shopping basket has still travelled 21,073km which is almost equivalent to the whole way around Australias coastline. The resulting greenhouse gas emissions estimate for all food transporting trucks carrying 25 items on any given day is the equivalent of 2,830 cars driving for a whole year! And that’s just for one shopping basket with 25 items! (Community Environment Park’s Food Miles Report, 2008).
As you can see, our food choices are far from sustainable but lucky there’s things you can do to help reduce food waste and food miles. Some major retailers have set aside sections for this kind of produce and businesses such as Uglies Snacks have come up with an awesome plan to take imperfect potatoes and turn them into delicious chips!
By also choosing to shop locally, you’re helping to reduce greenhouse gases and we can guarantee that your produce will be fresher and a lot tastier!
As Valentines Day approaches, we’ve just released these gorgeous gift cards to give to that someone special. Each card has been carefully hand designed and printed on recycled cardboard.
Its a special day every year but even if you don't have a partner to celebrate it with, consider writing a card to someone you really appreciate or even celebrating the day with your other single friends by going on a picnic or hosting a dinner party.
We hope you spread our “A little piece of love” motto by filling our cards with kind words, inspiration, gratefulness and of course love. A small message of gratitude and thankfulness can go along way and we’re sure who ever receives your card will have their day made.
As we're only a few days away from celebrating Australia Day and all that this wonderful country has to offer, we’d also like to raise our glass to everyone who creates and supports Australian Made products. Not only does it support local businesses and economy, it also helps our country reduce emissions by cutting back on travel miles.
There are so many wonderful people out there working like crazy to build their businesses as well as making the effort and taking the time to ensure their products are eco-friendly, sustainable and ethical. We take our hats off to every one of those businesses who are helping to make a difference.
There’s changes you can make every day to help small businesses and Australian made products by simply checking the label and deciding to make a change. Your choices and positive impact can go a long way. So next time, think before you shop and help celebrate Australia!

Over the past few weeks, we've had our Upcycle Competition running and we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated. You all had such wonderful ideas on how we could turn unused or unwanted materials into something new and usable.
We'd like to announce that Kate from Brisbane has won this competition with her entry of aluminium cans. Many of you may be unaware but aluminium cans actually take 200 years to decompose and have a detrimental effect on the ocean where a lot of them end up. We don't know about you but we'd much rather see them upcycled or recycled rather than have them harm our wildlife or end up in landfill. Did you also know that aluminium is also the most recyclable of all materials?
We thought that Kate's entry aligns perfectly with the initiatives and values that Sophia. supports and are proud to bring you creative designs with upcycled aluminium included.
Thank you again for your support and stay posted to see our creations as well as taking part in many more of our upcoming competitions.
Love and happiness xxx

We hope these hand designed and hand crafted items get you into the Christmas spirit and help you to begin the wonderful gift of giving. Keep checking in with us to find out more new and exciting products that we’ll be releasing soon!
We’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for all the wonderful feedback and an even bigger thank you to Suz Faulkner for her overwhelming support in helping to get Sophia. well and truly off the ground.
Love and happiness,
Sophia. needs your help! We need community input to make our ethical and sustainable dreams even more real. We’d like your input and suggestions on materials that we can upcyle. Upcycling is the process of taking items/materials that would usually be discarded and turning them into something new and functional.
Upcycling is currently being used in a range of our available products, such as our hand woven copper bowls. These elegant and unique kitchen accessories are made from old electrical wire that can no longer be used. Plenty of time has been taken to strip, untwist and weave this copper wire into creations for you to enjoy.
As a creative challenge, we need you to list as many materials as you like that would be possible to upcycle. If your suggested material is chosen for this challenge, you will win one of whatever creation we come up with! Start commenting and lets see what we can create together!
